Alejandra Lopez

This month I’m thrilled to be featuring Alejandra Lopez, the artist behind FaunaFlora! Following her Instagram account for the past year has brought so much joy to my feed and I have loved seeing what new work she comes up with. Her rugs and tapestries depicting animals and wildlife are immediately recognizable, with the colorful designs popping against similarly bold and colorful backgrounds. Here, she shares more about her creative background, her love of animals and her favorite parts about the work that she does.

Sus alfombras y tapices que plasman animales y vida silvestre son inmediatamente reconocibles por sus diseños coloridos que resaltan de sus fondos audaces y brillantes. Aquí, Alejandra comparte un poco más sobre su experiencia creativa, su amor por los animales y lo que más le gusta del trabajo que hace.

Tell us a little bit about your creative background. What led you to the work you do today?

My name is Alejandra López, i was born in Bogotá, Colombia, I am 28 years old and i think I´ve always been a creative person.

When I was a child I loved to draw and paint. I also liked to make clay figures, always inspired by the plants and animals that surrounded me.

I studied Design and Plastic arts at Los Andes University in Bogotá Colombia.

Illustration has been my passion for a long time and illustrating in punchneedle is something that I started to do because I was frustrated in the first months of quarantine, I was ready to start my own jewelry brand but because of Covid the workshop where I used to work was closed and I didn´t know what to do. I had my punchneedle as something to do in my free time but it wasn't in my mind that I could live from my punch needle art. So in that desperate time I posted some photos of my work on my instagram page and everything changed, people started to ask me for commissions and since may of 2020 until now i´ve been working non stop.

Desde muy pequeña me gustaba dibujar y pintar, también hacía figuras en plastilina, siempre enfocada e inspirada en la naturaleza que me rodeaba. Estudié dos carreras, Diseño y Artes Plásticas en la Universidad de Los Andes. Desde siempre me ha gustado ilustrar y el trabajo que hago ahora combina muchos de mis conocimientos previos. Nunca pensé que podía vivir de esto pero la pandemia me llevó a una crisis de la cual mis piezas en punch needle fueron el resultado.

How did you get started with Punch Needle? What about this technique appealed to you?

After I graduated from the university I tried to do many different things, I also studied ceramics and jewelry. I worked in different creative fields and before covid I was going to initiate my own jewelry brand but i couldn’t. So I decided to make punch needle pieces. I learned the technique by watching a couple of YouTube tutorials with the thin needle. Then I traveled to Argentina where I found the punchneedle I use today. I love this type of embroidery because it gives me the possibility of combining the things that I love the most, nature, illustration and creating with my hands.

Después de graduarme de la universidad probé muchas cosas que me gustaban, cerámica, freelance en ilustración, cuadros en ilustración digital, estudié joyería por más de un año y estaba dispuesta a empezar mi marca de joyería. Aprendí la técnica de punch needle hace un año y medio, vi un par de tutoriales y compré la aguja delgada, luego de usar esta aguja en unos cuantos cuadros bordados viajé a Argentina y por casualidad conseguí la aguja que uso ahora. Me gusta mucho el punchneedle porque puedo combinar 3 de las cosas que más me gustan, la naturaleza, la ilustración y hacer cosas con mis manos.

We'd love to hear about your creative process. How do you come up with new ideas? What inspires you? Do you have any practices or processes around this?

Nature has always been my biggest inspiration, plants and animals give me a huge range of possibilities. My creative process basically starts with the client's basic idea. It can be an animal, plant, pose or color. Then I investigate its biology and I make a photographic research of the real animals or plants. With this information I make a digital illustration and then I transfer the drawing to the fabric. Every art piece is unique and specially made for every client.

La naturaleza siempre ha sido mi mayor inspiración, existen muchas posibilidades cuando se toma como referencia los animales y las plantas. El trabajo creativo casi siempre empieza con una idea básica del cliente, puede ser un animal, planta o algún color. Desde ahí empiezo, investigo y busco fotos reales de animales y poses. Luego hago una ilustración digital basándome en estas imágenes y usando los colores que tengo en las lanas. Después de tener el diseño listo lo paso a la tela y empiezo a bordar. Cada pieza que hago es única, tiene un poco del cliente y de mi.

How has your work evolved over time?

At the beginning I had a lot of doubts and I was afraid of making complex designs digitally that I could never translate into the embroidery. But now I feel a lot more skilled and my confidence has grown a lot too. Now I can mix more colors, details and silhouettes, I feel capable of making and mixing more ideas.

Cada día me siento capaz de plasmar en el bordado ilustraciones más complejas, ahora siento que puedo hacer piezas con mayor cantidad de detalles y colores. Al principio me daba mucho miedo que al pasar el dibujo a la tela no se entendiera y no llenara mis expectativas, pero ahora me siento mucho más hábil y también ha aumentado mi autoestima.

What is your favorite part about the work that you do?

I love this work because I genuinely enjoy it. I feel happy when I use my needle, fabric and wool. I also like to have control over my time and space and being able to work wherever I want.

I feel very emotional when my clients receive their commissions and send me their happy messages and pictures of my work in their houses. It's beautiful.

Me alegra mucho poder trabajar en algo que amo y que disfruto. Me gusta poder controlar mi tiempo y poder trabajar en cualquier parte. También me ha parecido muy emocionante el contacto con los clientes y ver la emoción que sienten al recibir las piezas que me piden.

What do you hope others see / gain / take away from your work?

I would like others to understand that handmade work is full of love, patience and value. I would also want to make people from Colombia and other countries appreciate the biodiversity of my country by watching and buying my art work.

Me encantaría que la gente viera y entendiera que el trabajo manual es muy valioso y está lleno de amor. También me gustaría enfocarme en la biodiversidad de Colombia y que la gente aprenda y entienda el valor que tiene la naturaleza que nos rodea

Tell us about a favorite piece that you worked on, or one that had a lot of meaning to you.

I have many favorite pieces, but one that is very important for me is a tapir I made last year because it's a very curious animal that was really difficult for me to translate from a picture to an illustration because I had to use only two colors. I was very proud of myself when I finished it and so many people felt an attraction to it.

Tengo muchas piezas favoritas, una de ellas es el tapir que hice el año pasado porque es un animal extraño y al estar construido a partir de solo dos colores fue un gran reto para mi. Luego al publicarlo, a muchas personas les gustó esa pieza y me sentí muy orgullosa de mí misma por haberlo logrado.

What punch needle materials and tools do you use? Do you have any favorite supplier recommendations for tools, material or yarn?

It's been really difficult to find punch needle materials here in Colombia, I have tried many brands of yarns and fabrics. I'm in the process of fabricating a comfortable frame because my back is hurting because of the difficulties of making huge pieces.

I love my punch needle, I got it from a trip to Argentina, it doesn’t have a brand or number, it’s made of wood and it's super comfortable. I really think the needle found me, it was a matter of destiny.

La verdad es que acá en Colombia no es tan fácil conseguir materiales así que me ha tocado probar muchas, lanas y telas. Yo amo mi aguja mágica, la conseguí en Argentina y es lo mejor, súper cómoda no tiene marca ni número, la conseguí en la única tienda que estaba abierta el día que estaba paseando por el barrio de los objetos de tejido y bordado, yo siento que fue el destino que hizo que la encontrara.

What advice do you have for other artists or creatives looking to try punch needle?

It's very important to be constant and practice a lot. At the beginning it is really easy to feel frustrated because the embroidery doesn’t look perfect, but it is normal, sometimes this technique isn't as easy as it looks. Practice makes you find your own rhythm of work.

I think it is important to try different materials to find what textures you like the most and what makes you stand out from the other artists that use the punch needle as a way of expression.

Es importante ser constante y practicar mucho, seguramente las primeras veces no se va a ver tan bonito el bordado, pero con la práctica todo mejora, uno encuentra su propio ritmo. También me parece importante probar distintos materiales y encontrar su propio sello, algo que lo haga resaltar en frente de todos los artistas que usan esta técnica como medio de expresión.

Where do you see your work going in the future?

I'm in a moment of my life where I prefer to focus on the present, so I don't have many ideas of how I see my work in the future. Today I prefer to enjoy day by day, illustrating, talking to the people who reach out for my work and embroidering day by day.

Estoy en un momento de mi vida en el que no pienso mucho en el futuro, prefiero enfocarme en el presente y vivir día a día disfrutando lo que hago, ilustrando, hablando con las personas que siguen mi trabajo y bordando cada día. Sin prisa, sin afán.

How can the punch needle community support you and your work?

I think that Latin American artists have less visibility around the world and there are few artists in Colombia working in this type of projects with punch needle, so this community is very important for me because it would help me and other artists to become more visible and valued. There are a lot of great ideas and talent in this part of the world.

Creo que los artistas latinoamericanos no siempre tenemos tanta visibilidad, acá en Colombia no hay muchas personas haciendo esta clase de piezas y la comunidad de punchneedle puede ayudar a darnos a conocer

What is something that you are excited or curious about these days?

Recently I started to launch some knitted pieces with my illustrations. I'm getting excited with making wearable art. These pieces are also inspired in different places of Colombia.

Hace poco empecé a sacar piezas en tejido de punto y me encanta poder hacer arte que se pueda usar, eso me tiene muy emocionada. Todas las piezas estan inspiradas en distintos lugares hermosos de mi país.

What are 3 other fun facts about yourself that you would like to share with the Punch Needle Community?

• I really love animals. In my family we have four cats, two bunnies and my dog passed away yesterday, he was a huge part of my life.

• I love to travel around Colombia. It's amazing the diversity of cultures and landscapes that we can find just a few hours away from the big cities. I found a lot of inspiration from my trips.

• I have 3 sisters, all of them studied biology, i'm the different one although i'm always working with animals and plants. We all love nature.

• Amo los animales, tengo 4 gatos, dos conejos y mi perro acaba de fallecer pero lo sigo contando como parte de la familia

• Me encanta viajar por Colombia porque es demasiado rica en lo cultural y natural. A tan solo unas horas de la capital se pueden encontrar lugares increíbles llenos de inspiración.

• Tengo 3 hermanas, todas son biólogas, menos yo. Yo me enfoque en la naturaleza desde otra perspectiva, pero en general todas amamos la naturaleza.
